Serbian Army and Police securing the border

During the last month, more than 3.500 migrants gave up illegal bordercrossing to Serbia's territory. This fact states enough about the success of the military and the police guarding the state border to Bulgaria and Macedonia. The largest number of attempted illegal border crossing can be located in the area of Miratovac.

Major General Zelimir Glisovic, Commander of the joint forces, said that securing the state border is a dynamic job that has to be well planned, organized and free of any pattern.

“We are following developments on the ground, sharing information with all relevant security structures and engaging our forces accordingly”, General Glisovic added.

As the situation requires the cooperation of all the state structures, the fight against human trafficking will be a priority issue in the forthcoming period.

“There were attempted illegal border crossings day and night, individually and in groups. When they become aware of us, they try to get over the mountain passes, through forests, and impassable areas”, General Glisovic emphasizes.

Different procedures when securing the border like patrols along the border line, ambushes, reconnaissance from the ground and from the air using thermal imaging cameras and other devices, and in-depth control of road lines of communication, significantly reduced attempted illegal crossings compared to the period before the joint force´s engagement.

Both, the army and the police are guarding 457 kilometers of the border with Bulgaria and Macedonia. They are equipped with mobile and stationary thermal imaging systems, optoelectronic day and night vision devices and “quadricycles” (four-wheelers) for patrolling inaccessible areas. They have four helicopters for air patrolling and surveillance at their disposal.
